NOTE: Forattini (1957) and Cavalieri & Chiossone recorded Culicoides lopesi Barreto on the basis of two specimens from arroyo Yacuí and Iguazú Cué in Misiones province. Spinelli et al. (2005) reexamined these specimens that were very damaged and mounted in Canada balsam. They concluded that they belong to two different, unidentified species of the limai species group that differ from C. lopesi by the characters given by the antenna, excluding thus C. lopesi from the Argentinean fauna.
